For many centuries the science did not have answers on many questions that today seem simple to us. The people who suffered with various personality disorders were often considered possessed by demons or they were simply ignored. The poor understanding of the medical condition led to many misunderstandings and caused the suffering of thousands of people. What does religion say about personality disorders today? Do we fully understand them using the science? The picture is not as clear as one might imagine.

First of all, what is personality disorder exactly? It is a mental illness that causes abnormal personality traits and behavior. There are many different types of it and the most common ones are Borderline personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder and Schizoid personality disorder. Each of them have distinctive symptoms that include extreme moods, self-harm, paranoid thoughts, narcissistic views and others. Recent research in the United States shows that 1.6% of the population has borderline personality disorder alone and another 1% other personality disorders. We are talking about millions of people here.

What does religion has to say about it? Us, here at Allelon, we believe that the God wants us to be equally healthy. We do not believe that the people are born with mental disorders because of our creator. During the development something happens, perhaps it is genetic or because of environmental factors, but what matters is that the people who suffer with illnesses should be helped.

One might think that in the 21st century religion does not play any role in dealing with personality disorders, but it is far away from the truth. The people who suffer with mental illnesses are one of the loneliest and saddest people on Earth. We are talking about mental problems that is directly associated with the brain. The brain needs comfort and the comfort often comes from the faith. We should not forget that religion and going to the church is not only about the spirituality, but about community and friendship as well. We help each other, we give advice and simply have a pleasant time surrounded by the people that we like. Regardless if a person has personality disorder, anxiety or depression, he or she can find comfort in faith and religion.

The science has its role treating the illness. Therapy is the number one treatment for personality disorders and many patients experience improvements with dealing with symptoms. There are other methods of treating it, but we are not qualified to talk about them. If you believe that you have any of the personality disorders, we highly recommend to talk to a professional. We rather keep the article more analytical, covering a general overview of spiritual and scientific approach.

Again, we want to state that both sides have its role in our lives and we should separately use both science and religion for dealing with our health or other problems. Being radical about the choice and rejecting one while choosing another will only cause problems in our society.
